Howard Cooley

I have been at NIATT for three and a half years. The first year and a half I worked as an undergraduate collecting data and working with the professors and graduate students on projects. The last two years I have been working on my Master's degree and plan to graduate this fall semester and then continue some PhD work.

My research now involves a better method for estimating the average green time at an actuated intersection. This work uses the latest technology in traffic simulation where actual signal controller logic is being used. This work will also benefit the MOST signal timing project that creates lessons that will help state agencies train their personnel.

My first year as a transportation graduate student has kept me busy. I am currently spending the majority of my time learning new software (VISSIM), programming (VBA), and terminology (all kinds of transportation jargon). I hope to soon begin research on a project that will help detect signal phase failures. I'm not doing the "exciting" things that Howard is doing; although, the things that I am working on are fun.
