 Dr. F.H. (Sam) Froes, Director

Dr. Froes has worked in the area of synthesis, characterization, and testing of advanced materials for more than thirty years.  He has more than 780 scientific and technical publications, in excess of 60 patents, and has edited 27 books.  He is the editor-in-chief of the Kluwer publication "Advanced Performance Materials" and serves on the editorial board of four other journals.

Dr. Froes was elected a Fellow of ASM International in 1986, was awarded the Ben Gurion Medal (Israel) for his work on light metals in 1987, and gained the Affiliated Societies Council of the Engineering and Science Foundation Award (Dayton, Ohio) also for his work on light metals in 1989.

His work in the powder metallurgy arena led to a diploma from the All-Union Institute for Light Alloys (Moscow, USSR) in 1991, and Distinguished Service to Powder Metallurgy award from the Metal Powder Industries Federation (USA) in 1993.  Dr. Froes was elected to the Academy of Natural Sciences of Russia in 1995.

He was awarded the TMS Structural Materials Division Distinguished Service award in 1998, and the ASM Outstanding Teacher award also in 1998.  He has traveled widely, presently plenary and key note lectures in more than 35 countries. He is considered an expert in the light metals arena with particular emphasis on titanium.

Dr. Froes has published numerous reviews on processing techniques including powder metallurgy, rapid solidification, mechanical alloying, hot isostatic pressing and thermohydrogen processing (use of hydrogen as a temporary alloying element in titanium). He has worked extensively in technology transfer in various segments of the economy including transportation (aerospace, automobiles and trains) and sports equipment (he is a consultant to a number of golf companies and appears in three infomercials).
