About the SPEED LIMITS/SPEED ZONES Workshop: PLEASE BRING A CALCULATOR TO CLASS Speed Limits & Speed Zones is a Core Class for Level II, Road Master, for the Idaho Road Scholar Program. CEUs are available upon request, at least 3 weeks prior to the class. How are realistic and enforceable speed limits determined? What does the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices say about setting speed limits? What is an engineering study to determine a speed limit? What constitutes a speed zone? What factors are considered when determining a speed zone and setting a speed limit? This class will answer all of the above questions, defining speed zones, speed limits, and providing collection data for a professional engineer to make a recommendation. The second part of the class discusses in detail the requirements of an engineering study: how to perform a study to obtain the necessary data to present to a registered engineer, and an analysis of the surrounding parameters to be considered as part of the data. The third part of the class includes a field exercise to perform speed data collection on a street or highway in the area. An exam, required for qualification to perform the field data collection for a speed study, will be given The course is to conform with the agreement between LHTAC and the Board of Professional Engineers to allow Local Jurisdictions to train and become proficient in obtaining engineering data to be presented to LHTAC (Professional Engineer) for determining speed limits. Who Should Attend Speed Limits & Speed Zones: The intent of this class is to train one or several of the employees of a city, county, or highway district on how to collect data for an engineering study, data that can be used by a Registered Engineer, to recommend an enforceable speed limit on the roads of your local jurisdiction. Supervisors, foremen, lead men, and other responsible employees are eligible to take the class. Unless there is a professional engineer on staff in the local highway jurisdiction, it is recommended that at least one member of management/staff attend this class. The persons meet-ing the requirements of this class will be qualified to collect and submit the data required for an engineering study and speed limit determination. This class is appropriate for elected officials, to have an understanding of the requirements for setting speed limits. Participants will receive a copy of the LHTAC manual, “Speed Limits & Speed Zones.” |
