Objectives for today:
- Understand timing parameters for
major street of an arterial
Topics:
Assignment
Howard Cooley will be presenting material on average green time
estimation methods from chapter 16 of the Highway Capacity Manual during
class 26 on April 24th (next week). In preparation for Howard's
presentation, please note the following reading assignment:
Reading Assignment
Please read the required pages, 106 – 110, of the HCM Appendix B
regarding the computational procedure to estimate the green time of an
actuated controlled inter section. I have provided some questions to
guide your reading. Note that some of the reading is suggested or
optional and was intended to guide your thinking process about green
time estimation.
HCM Appendix B
Required reading (pages 106-110) and questions
:
1. What is the difference between the green time at an actuated
controlled intersection versus the green time at a fixed time controlled
intersection?
2. Explain the circular dependency in the green time estimation
computational procedure.
3. Name the two signal timing parameters that constrain the green time
estimation.
4. What signal timing parameters affect the length of the green time at
an actuated intersection?
Suggested reading (HCM Chapter 16,
pages 1 – 26, Appendix B, pages 93 –121) and questions
1. What measure of effectiveness is used to determine the level of
service of a signalized intersection?
2. List some factors that affect the saturation flow rate at a
signalized intersection.
3. What is a critical lane group?
4. What are the elements of control delay?
5. What are the inputs for the uniform control delay?
Class notes:
None.
