Grading: Your grade in this class will be determined by your performance in completing design reports and presenting the results of your design work, the quality of your participation on your design team, and your performance on examinations.  The table below lists the weight for each of the factors that will determine your final grade.

Design Project 1  10 %
Design Project 2  10 %
Design Project 3 [Group Project]  20 %
Lab Assignment/Homework  15 %

Exam 1 - Mid term

 15 %
Exam 2 - Mid term  15 %
Final Exam  20 %

Design Reports and Presentation of Design Results: The purpose of a design report is to present the results of your design work, a clear articulation (both in words and in graphics) of the design elements, and the computations and analysis that support the design.  Design reports should be clearly organized and well written.  Your ability to effectively communicate the results of your technical work is extremely important in this class and in your work as a professional engineer. Examples of professionally produced design reports will be available on the class webpage for your review. There will be a total of 3 design projects. Design projects 1 and 2 will be “individual project”. Design project 3 will be a group project. You will be asked to present the results of design project 3. Each team will organize its presentation and present the results collectively.

Examinations: There will two mid-term exams and a final exam. Each of the three examinations will cover one part of the course.  The examinations will be held the week following the completion of the design report for that part of the course. Examination material will include any/all material covered in class, any/all material from the assigned readings, and material pertaining to the class   assignments.

Class Attendance and Participation: Some of the material covered/discussed during lectures will not be in your text or readings although you will be responsible for it whether you choose to come to class or not.  Class attendance and participation should be one of your higher priorities this term.

Grade Scale: A ≥ 90              80≤B<89                     70≤C<79                     60≤D<69                     F<59

Other Expectations:

Here are some other things that I expect of you during class:

bulletI expect you to attend all classes. Your input and contribution is very important. If you are not in class, we cannot learn from you, and you cannot learn from other students.
bulletI expect you to be on-time for each class. If you are late, you not only disrupt others in the class when you enter, but you will miss out on important information.
bulletI expect you to turn in all assignments on time. Late assignments will not be accepted.
bulletI expect you to ask when you have a question. If you do not understand something that is being discussed, it is likely that others in the class do not understand as well. Asking questions is a very important part of the learning process.
bulletI expect that the work that you complete will be your best effort and of the highest quality. Learning to do work of high quality is important now and when you begin your career as a transportation engineer.
bulletI expect that you will work with others in the class on assignments. Working in teams is important in today’s engineering environment.
bulletI expect that the work that you turn in will be your own work, not copied or unfairly extracted from other students or other sources.
bulletI expect you to be honest in your dealings with me and others in the class. High ethical standards are one of the cornerstones in engineering education and practice.
