Policies and Expectations

Deadlines: Assignments must be turned in by the due date/time unless prior arrangements have been made. Unless stated otherwise, all assignments are due at the start of the class period on the due date shown on the schedule. Late assignments will not be graded unless prior permission has been granted.
Attendance: Attendance at all course activities is expected. Make-ups will only be given with valid medical excuses or for other documented extenuating circumstances.  Missing more than two periods in this class is considered excessive.
Communication: Timely communication is as important in learning as it is in industry. I use bulk e-mail to make announcements to the class, and expect you to maintain your current e-mail address on the university system, and inform me of changes. I also expect you to monitor the schedule page. There are various ways to communicate with me: you can talk to me in person, call me on the phone, send e-mail, or send anonymous feedback through the feedback page.
Student Conduct: All students are expected to honor the UI Student Code of Conduct. Violations include, but are not limited to: copying others homework assignments, plagiarism, and cheating on exams. Please be aware that any violation of the UI Student Code of Conduct may result in a course grade of 'F'.
Plagiarism: From the UI Student Code of Conduct: "Consequences for academic dishonesty may be imposed by the course instructor. Such consequences may include but cannot exceed a grade of “F” in the course. The instructor should attempt to notify the student of the suspected academic dishonesty and give the student an opportunity to respond. The notice and the opportunity may be informal and need not be in writing." Students caught plagiarizing will be given a grade of "F" in CE 115. Plagiarism occurs when you use but do not cite someone else's work, even if it is re-worded; or by not indicating that a passage (paragraph, sentence or even a small part of a sentence) is directly quoted even if the reference is cited.  Following the structure/organization of someone else's work is also plagiarism. Examples are provided here.

Assignments and Grading

Exams (2) 40% : A mid-term and a final. Exams are worth 20% each.

Problem Assignments 30% : Problems will be assigned from the required texts as well as other sources. Field trip(s) write-up(s) and in-class quizzes and exercises will be grouped with problem assignments. All problem assignment work is to be done individually unless specified otherwise.

Project 30% : The class will be split into groups, each group will be responsible for completing a project over the course of the semester, and presenting project work orally at the end of the semester. See the Project Page for more information.

I reserve the right to modify grades up to 10% (or one letter) based on class participation, attendance, and peer evaluations.
