Jobs in Intelligent Transportation Systems
The Transportation Equity Act for the 21st Century
(TEA-21) requires that Intelligent Transportation System
(ITS) projects conform to the National ITS Architecture
and appropriate standards. The availability of engineers
who understand ITS concepts, tools and techniques and
are skilled in the implementation of these systems, and
who are aware of the increasingly complex political and
social environment in which decisions are made, are
vital to the design and operation of efficient
transportation systems. There are several areas of
employment within ITS.
The most encompassing
category is often referred to as Advanced Traffic
Management Systems (ATMS). ATMS involves a number of
different tasks. One such task may be to incorporate an
incident management program for a particular
jurisdiction, and insure the program is sufficient to
handle the many common types of incidents that can occur
in a traffic network. Tasks within ATMS often have some
overlap with tasks in Advanced Traveler Information
Systems (ATIS). A task within ATIS may be to develop and
manage a system that provides drivers with en-route
information about the latest traffic conditions. Another
category within ITS is Advanced Public Transportation
Systems, and as an example, work within this category
may involve development and deployment of security
systems in public transportation facilities (11).
Advanced Rural Transportation Systems (ARTS) may
involve the implementation of a “Mayday System,” which
would be a GPS device that determines where a vehicle is
located, coupled with a system to call emergency
services to find and aid a lost vehicle.
Commercial Vehicle
Operations (CVO) is another category within ITS. An
example of an application of ITS technologies in the CVO
category is to setup a system providing electronic
clearance for commercial vehicles through the use of
on-board transponders and electronic license plate
readers. This would eliminate wasted time stopped at
heavy vehicle weigh stations. The final major category
within ITS is referred to as Advanced Vehicle Control
and Safety Systems (AVCSS). An example of a user service
provided under AVCSS is lateral collision avoidance,
which utilizes safety and collision sensors to monitor
the areas to the sides of a vehicle and present warnings
to the driver about potential hazards. |
